After some construction delays (so what’s new?) Addie D’Agostino finally got her boutique gourmet market open in early July. Just blocks from Central Market (and in the same development as Ouisie’s Table), it seems to take its inspiration from the late Eatzi’s, with ready-to-eat salads, sandwiches, dinner entrees and baked goods, as well as a small but smartly-chosen collection of groceries, including Way Back When dairy products, Slow Dough breads, Trentino gelato and imported pasta. D’Agostino, who has worked in New York City, has teamed up with chef Dustin Teague (formerly at A Fare Extraordinaire) and pastry chef Julie Hewitt.

So what does D’Agostino have to counter the megastore? In brief, convenience and local quality.

“You don’t have to weave through a maze,” D’Agostino says. “You don’t have to spend thirty minutes to get two things. And we make everything daily from scratch, so we think when people taste our food there’ll be no comparison.”

D’Agostino conceived Relish during her time at the Culinary Institute of America and designed it to resemble the friendly neighborhood markets she encountered in her travels to Europe. She returned to Houston to put the idea together, partnering with chef Dustin Teague of A Fare Extraordinaire.

Cute isn’t a bad thing, if you do it right. Freshly opened Relish Fine Foods (3951 San Felipe) is still waiting for a few fixtures to come in, but the kitchen is fully functioning. Available now are house-made prepared brownies and cookies, as well as lunch and dinner items such as the wild rice shrimp salad with edamame and a jalapeno pimento cheese sandwich. Kitchen staples such as dry pasta, salt, olive oil, meat from Al Marcus of The Grateful Bread and fresh baked bread from Slow Dough can be purchased in their retail section, too. Remember Eatzie’s on Post Oak Blvd.? This little nook is a smaller, chicer version of the long gone market-eatery
